Garry Dubois found guilty of 1974 rape and murder of Brisbane girls Leanne and Vicki McCulkin
Garry Dubois has been found guilty of the 1974 rape and murder of Queensland girls Leanne and Vicki McCulkin, and guilty of the manslaughter of their mother Barbara.

Dubois, 69, and Vincent O'Dempsey were charged with the murders of Leanne, 11, Vicki, 13, and their 34-year-old mother Ms McCulkin in October, more than 40 years after the trio were last seen alive.

A jury today found Dubois guilty of raping and murdering the girls, and guilty of the manslaughter of Ms McCulkin.

He was also found guilty of deprivation of liberty.
Barbara McCulkin and her daughters have been missing since January, 1974.

The pair allegedly took the McCulkins from their Highgate Hill home on or about January 16, 1974.

The trial heard Dubois confessed to a friend that he and O'Dempsey had tied the family up and driven them to bushland near Brisbane, where they were killed.

Their bodies were never found.

The jury deliberated for more than 10 hours before delivering its verdict this afternoon.

His wife Jan Dubois also sat emotionless in the public gallery as her husband was convicted of offences that will likely see him spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Prosecutor David Meredith had suggested the motivation behind the killings was the 1973 fire at Brisbane's Whiskey Au Go Go nightclub that killed 15 people.

Dubois and three others were paid to burn down the Torino nightclub in February, 11 days before the fatal blaze.

The court heard Dubois and O'Dempsey were worried they'd be wrongly linked to the Whisky Au Go Go fire and wanted to silence Mrs McCulkin, who was possibly blackmailing them.

Outside court, Detective Inspector Mick Dowie said the investigation team and families of the victims welcomed the jury's verdicts of guilty.

Dubois will be sentenced after the trial of his co-accused Vincent O'Dempsey.

He is due to stand trial next year.
