Woman who jumped to death from rooftop bar was ex-Hasidic Jew who wanted to help others leave religion

Friends of the woman who jumped to her death from a Flatiron District rooftop bar said Tuesday she had hoped to be an inspiration to fellow ex-Hasidic Jews — even as she struggled with her own depression.

In March, Faigy Mayer wrote on Facebook about leaving Hasidic Judaism behind half a decade earlier.

“The next five years were incredibly hard but also incredibly rewarding,” she wrote. “I’ve sort of lost all my family, but I've made many amazing wonderful friends instead. I am so grateful for the life I have.

“I hope to be an inspiration for others who leave,” she added. “It’s been 5 years and I’ve made it!”

Prior to her death, Mayer wrote to a friend complaining of the minimal secular education and limited horizons available to those who grew up as she did, asserting that “hassidic Judaism shouldn’t exist at all.”

“If people were allowed to think, they would not be religious,” she wrote.

she also struggled with mental health issues

She was hospitalized three times for depression,” Levin said. “She was having some trouble.”

Mayer’s suicide rattled members of Footsteps, a nonprofit Mayer was involved with that helps former ultra-Orthodox Jews adjust to their new lives. The organization is reeling from a string of recent tragedies.

In an interview with The Daily Mail, Finette Lerman- Russak said her cousin Faigy Mayer, 30, had cut off contact with family members herself and exaggerated the degree of her isolation – and that she had long suffered from “borderline personality disorder with paranoid tendencies and a secondary diagnosis of bi-polar disorder.”
