Oct 23, 2012 - The police department confirmed Tuesday that they have collected hundreds of samples of DNA from people around the community in the effortWESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) – The Westminster Police Department confirmed Tuesday that they have collected hundreds of samples of DNA from people around the community in the effort to catch Jessica Ridgeway’s killer.

Police hope DNA from one of the crime scenes, either Ridgeway’s Westminster neighborhood or Ketner Lake, will help lead them to the killer.

“All of the samples that we’ve taken up to this point have been voluntarily donated by the people who we’re contacting,” Westminster police spokesperson Trevor Materasso said.

The samples fall into several categories — those contacted in the canvass of Ridgeway’s neighborhood or where her backpack was found in Superior; people in the area who were on cellphones at the time of the disappearance; and those who might fit the description of the person who they are seeking, who they described as 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8 with light skin and brown hair.

they then DNA tested hundreds of suspects.

ultimately the mother turned her son in and the son's DNA matched the DNA found on Jessica's backpack. He confess to her killing.

A 17-year-old CSI student has confessed to the abduction and killing of ten-year-old Jessica Ridgeway and to a separate attack on a runner earlier this year, prosecutors said today.

Austin Reed Sigg, from Colorado, made his first court appearance today for both crimes. He kept his head bowed for much of the time, talking with his attorney but otherwise saying very little.

Authorities said they have overwhelming DNA evidence against Sigg and revealed some was found on Jessica's back pack.

let's review what happened here and how it compares with Jonbenet.

On October 5, 2012 in Westminster, Jefferson County, Colorado, USA after school as Jessica Ridgeway was walking home from school in broad daylight

'She was wrong place, wrong time. It was a random place, a random time. Random everything,' Sigg told officers in the interrogation video which was obtained by KDVR.

'I was just driving and just kind of looking. And I saw her...found the place to park. And I parked, and I waited. And she walked by, and I grabbed her.'

as Austin Sigg grabbed Jessica Ridgeway, he also grabbed her book bag, which transferred his DNA from his skin cells to her book bag, and was left behind, as he put Jessica into his car. He then drove off, with the book bag left behind, for searchers to discover.

Jessica's family reported her missing, and retraced her steps, and found her book bag. they then tested the book bag for touch DNA, and found DNA. this DNA is the same DNA as DNA found on a jogger that was sexually assaulted a year earlier.

they then canvassed the neighborhood and got over 500 male DNA samples, with no match.

Austin Sigg's mother called 911 to turn her son in. His DNA matched the touch DNA found on Jessica Ridgeway backpack, DNA of skin cells that were transferred from Austin Sigg's hands onto Jessica's backpack.

Austin confess and was sentenced. Keep in mind that when they found the DNA, they found it on one location on her backpack, which could have been any male DNA from any student at her school.

the DNA was her killer's.


how is this any different from the reasoning Mary Lacy and her DNA and forensic scientists use for the tDNA found on Jonbenet?

it's not. the best scientific explanation for the DNA found on Jonbenet in 3 locations on separate articles of clothing in highly suspicious locations is an intruder did it.

the DNA they found on Jonbenet is more extensive than what was found in Jessica Ridgeway, and they also found other unsourced trace evidence including unsourced fiber, shoe print, tape, ligature, animal hair


if you apply RDI-intruder denialists anti-science tactics from Jonbenet to Jessica, you would argue finding that male DNA which happens to match Austin Sigg is "incidental". it is "secondary transfer" "no evidentary value" "not a scintilla of evidence of an intruder"

wrong

RDI lynch mob may not apply the same scientific forensic standards from Jessica Ridgeway to Jonbenet, but the forensic scientists do, and their conclusion is there is no innocent explanation for that DNA + other evidence of intruder.
