3-year-old who died in accidental shooting identified

LEBLEU SETTLEMENT, LA (AP) - A 3-year-old LeBleu Settlement child died at a local hospital Monday night following an accidental shooting at her home on Arsene Road, authorities said.

Family members have identified the child as 3-year-old Alexis Mercer. Services for Mercer will be handled by Johnson & Brown Funeral Home.

Visitation for Mercer will take place from 3-9 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home, followed by a mass at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Father Bennie Wego will officiate. Burial will follow the mass at LeFranc Cemetery.

"This is a moment as a Sheriff that I have to tell people, you have got to protect our children," said Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso in an interview with KPLC.

Mancuso said the father had been cleaning his guns in the living room that day, while his wife and children were gone, and he did not put them up before leaving for work. When the mother returned home with the three children, ages 1-3, the 3-year-old girl was able to get one of the loaded guns, accidentally causing the gun to fire.

"It makes me angry," said Mancuso. "It makes my heart hurt. It's just something that shouldn't happen."

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Kim Myers said the other children were not injured. She says the assortment of guns included a rifle and two handguns and said the child most likely used the hand gun. Mancuso said incidents like this could have easily been avoided.

"Lock your guns, and keep them out of reach of children," he said. "They can't do it on their own. They're curious. They're going to go look. They're going to show a friend. If you can't afford a gun safe, every single gun that's sold in America comes with a gun lock. Lock your guns and keep them out of reach of children."

A five-year-old girl has died after she accidentally shot and killed herself while playing with her father's handgun.

Haley Moore was at her father Eric's home in LaPlace, Louisiana, on Saturday with her two siblings when she picked up the weapon and accidentally pulled the trigger.

She was taken to hospital but died a short time later.  

Her dad was in the shower at the time while detectives have said the gun was not locked away in a secure location.
Haley's father is a disabled military veteran and is separated from the youngster's mother.

Joy Ursin, the family's next-door neighbor, said he had the children for the weekend.

She told the Times-Picayune he was always mindful of securing his guns when they were staying with him.

At around 9.30am on Saturday morning, Ursin's husband ran into the house calling her name.

She then went outside to see her husband comforting Moore's two other children. The eldest kept saying 'my sister shot herself', over and over again.

'All I can say is it's an unfortunate thing because Eric is a disabled military veteran and one thing is he has his guns, but he's not ignorant to the fact of the danger, especially when his kids are around,' she told the newspaper.

'He would always stress how he had to secure (them), what he had to go through when the kids came. He made sure of that because he would get his kids every other weekend.

'They had a full schedule planned,' she added. 'He was gonna take them to see "Angry Birds" and they were all excited about that. And then this tragedy

A three-year-old Michigan boy is dead after accidentally shooting himself in the head with a .40-caliber handgun at a home on Sunday afternoon in Lenawee County's Franklin Township.

Michigan State Police say Jonathan Kaufman found the loaded pistol in a closet while his father and older brother were outside and fatally wounded himself with a single shot.

State troopers and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the scene, but they could not save the boy and he was pronounced dead.

The father of a three-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself in the head with a loaded 40 caliber Smith and Wesson backed the right to bear arms hours after losing his son on Sunday.

Brian Holbrook, of Michigan, said: 'I have nothing wrong with guns, I will still support the Second Amendment' [sic]

He made his comments on his Faceboook page hours after his son shot himself in the head after finding a loaded gun at his home, which was owned by Joshua Michael Greenhill, 30.
The grieving father added that gun owners should keep their weapons secure and safe.

Police said Damon died after finding a loaded gun in a closet at the family home in Dundee, Michigan.

Gun owner Greenhill, who lived at the house and has a permit, had placed the weapon inside his closet in an unlocked case and was charged today with careless discharge causing injury or death.
