A Denver-area lacrosse player died Tuesday night after collapsing during a game.
Kristin Callbeck, a 15-year-old freshman at Smoky Hill (Aurora, Colo.), was taken to a nearby hospital after collapsing. She died a short time later.

Alexa Flores had been on life support, but she died at the hospital at around 8:30 Thursday morning. May 4, 2017 while driving to school.

According to Peoria police, the 16-year-old driving the passenger car ran a stop sign and was T-boned by a pickup truck.

"I have minor injuries but I'm ok," says Reagan Fifield. "We got lucky."

Sisters Reagan and Kylee Fifield were also in the car. Both girls got banged up, but stopped by a makeshift memorial set up for Alexa.

She was like my best friend; sweetest girl," said Kylee Fifield.

The accident happened at Sonoran Mountain Ranch and Ridgeline roads in Peoria, which is northwest of Interstate 17 and Happy Valley Road.
Preliminary investigation shows that the pickup truck was traveling westbound on Sonoran Mountain Ranch Road.  The passenger car was traveling southbound on West Ridgeline Road and failed to yield from a stop sign at the intersection.

The passenger car was occupied by four teenage females: two 16-year-olds, one 15-year-old and one 14-year-old.

Flores was in the backseat on the driver’s side and sustained extensive injuries. She was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and was put on life support.

A family member, who did not wish to be identified, said the young woman, who was studying at Australian Catholic University's Ballarat campus, was "one of the kindest souls to walk this earth and didn't deserve this."

Loreto College principal Judith Potter described her former student as "a wonderful role-model for her peers" in a letter sent out to the school's parents.

"In the words of one of her teachers, 'she was full of life and her enthusiasm at time seemed to just bubble over and fill the room'."

The school released a statement on Friday, saying the school was in mourning.  

"She was a most vibrant, compassionate and genuine young woman who strived to be the best she could in all areas of her life."

"We are also working with the Australian Catholic University and local schools to provide information to students and families. The risk to other students is very low."

McGrath had studied at Loreto College before enrolling at Australian Catholic University’s Ballarat campus.

OHP officials say Winton was driving a 1995 Honda Civic along 3900 Rd. when she failed to negotiate the curve. Investigators say she slammed into a tree, which sent her car into the creek.

Winton was not wearing a seat belt. She was pronounced dead at the scene from massive injuries.

A two-vehicle crash at 8:40 a.m. Friday, May 5, 2017 has claimed the life of a Haleyville woman.  Hannah Dianne Bridgmon, 20, a 2015 graduate of Haleyville High School was killed when the 2015 Dodge she was driving collided with a 1997 Kenworth driven by Jared Nicholas James, 27, of Tuscumbia.  Bridgmon was pronounced dead at the scene, and James was transported to a local hospital. The crash occurred on Alabama 13 at the 279-mile marker, approximately four miles south of Phil Campbell.  

Alexa, like Hannah Baker in 13 Reasons Why, was a bit different, quirky, and was made fun of behind her back by many of her classmates. She didn’t fit into the “norm,” wasn’t a “cool kid,” didn’t get tons of phone calls or invited to many parties.

She was no shrinking violet either. She had strong opinions, was mature in many ways, and had no tolerance for gossip and small-minded people. She wanted the friendships that she had to be meaningful.

Reactions from teachers, administrators and parents of friends were of absolute shock. The personality Alexa showed the outside world was of an upbeat and happy young lady. None of them knew that Alexa actually suffered from depression.

A young woman was killed after she was crushed by a tractor at an exclusive holiday resort.

Chloe Lou Farrell, 22, suffered fatal injuries while staying at the holiday park in Abersoch, North Wales with friends on Friday night.

Witnesses say Chloe was helping to launch a boat when the tractor rolled over on top of her.

Paramedics and firemen were called and had to use hydraulics to life the tractor.

But Chloe was tragically pronounced dead at the scene having suffered extensive injuries.

HOPE Carnevali should have celebrated her 21st birthday in February, with her Mum and sisters, London and Tyne, by her side.

Instead she drew her last ragged, torn and desperate breath on the front lawn of the family home last November, in the arms of her family, as she waited for an ambulance that came too late.

Hope was one of nine people who died in the wake of a phenomenon as deadly as it was unforeseen and bizarre: a mass incident of thunderstorm asthma on November 21, 2016.

It was the deadliest of thunderstorms. whipping up a suffocating pollen mist and sweeping it into Melbourne, leaving a city gasping and panicking and hospitals and ambulances swamped.

An ambulance took more than 30 minutes to arrive after Hope, a 20-year-old law student and asthma sufferer, was struck.

Her death left her family reeling, her mother, Danielle Carnevali says in her first television interview with 60 Minutes which airs tonight.

Ms Carnevali should be celebrating Mother’s Day and night with her daughter, instead she is sharing her painful loss with Australia.

“It’s indescribable. I’m watching my daughter just disintegrate, barely able to move, and it was traumatic,” she says, recounting the long wait on hold on the phone, and the numerous calls to triple-0 to check where the ambulance was as the minutes — and Hope’s life — ticked away.

“The hardest part for me as a mum is I had that chance of saving my daughter’s life taken away from me.

“To not be able to help her as a parent, that is the hardest thing you can go through.”

The closest hospital was an eight minute drive, but they were assured the ambulance wasn’t far away, Hope’s uncle, John Carnevali told Melbourne radio in the days after her death.

He called for a review, saying if they’d known of the wait, they would have rushed her to hospital themselves.

LIKE A WAR ZONE’

As Hope struggled for breath on the lawn, every hospital in the city was in chaos.

The storm swept into Melbourne about 6pm, a high pollen count, strong northerly winds and humid conditions forming the deadly cocktail to trigger thunderstorm asthma.

It happens when pollen granules rupture from moisture in the air. They break up into hundreds of tiny particles that find their way into human lungs and make breathing difficult.

It triggers bouts of asthma, even in people who have never suffered it before.

One of the 8500-plus Melbourne victims described it as “like an elephant sitting on your chest”.

Emergency services received triple-0 calls every four to five seconds, battling to respond to more than 1900 calls for help, more than 600 of them involving respiratory illness.

They ran out of ambulances as emergency calls jumped 450 per cent. Hospitals were reeling, many of them enacted disaster management plans to cope with floods of patients struggling to breathe.

“It was like a war zone,” Paramedic Anita Lloyd tells 60 Minutes.

“Absolute chaos. There was a 30 metre, three-person-deep line out the front of Footscray Emergency Department and then inside. I’ve just never seen anything like it.”

Paul Holman, Ambulance Victoria’s Head of Emergency Management, says it was an emergency of a scale and spread like “I’d never seen, heard, read about or even envisaged in our planning.”

“We know that people died waiting for an ambulance,” he says.

“I didn’t become ... and none of us become paramedics ... to know that someone was going to

die waiting for us.”

Thunderstorm asthma has been witnessed just four times in the past 30 years in Melbourne. Last year’s storm has been described as the deadliest ever.

Rebekah Wena’s 11-year-old daughter, Jael, was one of thousands to suffer breathing difficulties.

She tried to get to the head of a crowded hospital emergency queue, saying “we need we need a doctor immediately, she can’t breathe,” she tells 60 Minutes.

“And I think I heard someone in the line say ‘we all can’t’.”

“And I looked around me and I just said ‘what’s happening? This must be the end of the world. This must be the last day on earth’.”

A TEENAGER died after suffering an asthma attack when she ran for a train after a night out with friends.

Her best friend described the 18-year-old’s lips and face “went blue and cold” as she struggled to breathe.

Despite the best attempts of her friends, fellow passengers and paramedics, Lucy died after suffering a cardiac arrest.
“She was a talented linguist who was awarded three A grades at A-level and would now be studying French and Spanish at university with unlimited possibilities ahead of her.

“Her loss is a tragedy with which we, Lucy’s family, are still struggling to come to terms with but which we are determined there should be some positive outcome.”

An inquest into Lucy’s death heard she had suffered mild asthma since the age of 10.

She had always managed to keep her condition under control using inhalers provided by her GP.

Mr Goldstone told the inquest: ”She was very good with dealing with it and being sensible.

“I had never known her to have anything resembling an asthma attack until after her death when I found out that she had a few episodes with asthma.

“One when she was skiing and she had an asthma attack after climbing a significant way, but this was under control as soon as she took her inhaler.

”I know that two days before her death she had told her friend that she was at the gym but had to leave as she couldn’t breathe properly but that only lasted a matter of seconds.

“She was sending WhatsApp messages expressing concerns about her breathing.”

Experts who carried out a post mortem said Lucy suffered a “very rapid on set of asthma”, saying it was the “most severe attack” they had seen in 20 years

“We said that if we saw our tram pull up that would we run to get it.

“We saw the tram in the distance and began to run up the stairs. I could tell that Lucy was out of breath so I told her that I would run ahead and stop the tram doors so that she could catch up.

“At that point she did not appear to be having any difficulty breathing.

“I went to sit down and she came and sat down next to me.

“Then her head fell back and she collapsed whilst sitting down.

“I got her inhaler out of her pocket and people started to notice that something was going on.

Fellow passenger Danielle Fitton, a solicitor who was on the way back from a night out with work colleagues told the hearing: ”I could hear Lucy wheezing with laboured breathing before she collapsed.

“My mother is first aid trained and so I text her straight away saying someone is having an asthma attack, what do I do?

“But Lucy quickly collapsed and I got her to the floor and tried to speak to her but there was no response.

“We used one of the emergency boxes to alert the driver.

“By this time her face had gone pale.

“The tram stopped and I called the emergency services and called out for assistance from other passengers.”

The tram was evacuated whilst paramedics tended to Lucy but they found no sign of life and she was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary where she was pronounced dead by doctors.

According to the Hemphill County Sheriff’s Office, ReAnna Wilson was walking east into town on Elliot Street and was crossing the train tracks about a quarter-mile south of the Purcell Avenue crossing. She stopped for a train to pass by going north.

But when Wilson stepped back onto the tracks after the train passed, she was struck by another BNSF train heading south, the sheriff’s office said. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Larry Dunnam.

Sheriff Nathan Lewis says investigators believe that Wilson was wearing earbuds and may not have heard the approaching train.

A heartbroken mother is pleading with parents to protect their children from a deadly strain of meningitis following the death of her 18-year-old daughter.

Lauren Sandall died from meningitis just weeks after she was denied the life-saving vaccine at her local GP because supplies were too low.

The 18-year-old, from Woodford Green in London, had just started her first week at university when she caught the deadly bacterial infection.

It started with a headache and aches and pains, and just 48 hours later she developed septicaemia - a deadly form of blood poisoning triggered by meningitis.Ms Sandall said: 'We lost our beautiful daughter Lauren to meningococcal W meningitis and septicaemia in October.

'She was just 18 years old. I only heard about the MenACWY vaccine the week that Lauren was due to start at university in Bournemouth.'
Ms Sandall said: 'Our GP surgery said that they did not have enough of the vaccine so Lauren was told she'd have to wait as they needed two weeks' notice to get it.

'Lauren went to university without the jab and she had only been there a week and a half before she became ill.

'Her symptoms were nothing that anyone would run to A&E with: headache, vomiting and some aches and pains.

'Just 48 hours after the first symptoms, she was extremely ill with life-threatening septicaemia.
'The disease took our daughter's life very quickly.

14-year-old softball player at Forney (Texas) High School was tragically killed leaving a team dinner when she fell as a car reversed to leave the event and was run over.

As reported by Dallas-Fort Worth CW affiliate KDAF, Forney freshman Emily Galiano was pronounced dead Tuesday night shortly after she was airlifted to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. The teen was run over by a teammate when a group of team members were piling into a Jeep. The driver began to move the car precisely as Galiano slipped and she was run over almost instantly.

A violent two-car crash caused by a bizarre move on behalf of one of the drivers proved fatal for a 2-year-old girl who was not in a car seat nor wearing a seat-belt during the violent collision.

KDKA-TV reports two-year-old Saryiah Jefferson died shortly after the 1 a.m. Thursday crash on the Parkway North/Interstate 279 outside of Pittsburgh.

She was pronounced dead at Allegheny General Hospital.

The 24-year-old driver of the same car and a 22-year-old passenger also were not wearing seat-belts, KDKA reports, adding:

Pa. State police say the crash was triggered when the vehicle with the little girl, which was traveling in the left lane of the Parkway North, suddenly stopped, and then for unknown reasons, the driver suddenly began traveling in reverse.

A second northbound vehicle then crashed with the car that was now moving the opposite direction, with the car operating in reverse.

In all, three people, including both drivers, were injured

“I saw a girl, young . . . She was on the ground,” said Marvin, 38.

“Her forehead was busted. Blood everywhere. She was gone. A police officer took his handkerchief and put it over her face. He was crying.”

A 16-year-old Cobb County, Georgia, girl died Sunday after a tree holding her hammock snapped and fell on her, according to Atlanta news station WSB TV.

Joelle Dalgeish was camping at Red Top Mountain Friday night. She and several girls were celebrating a friend’s 16th birthday when one of the trees holding her hammock snapped and landed on her, leaving her unconscious and unresponsive.

Bartow County Emergency Medical Services responded to at 911 call at approximately 11:30 pm and transported the teen to Cartersville Medical Center. She was later life-flighted to a hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee and was placed on life support with head and spine trauma, according to the Marietta Daily Journal, but eventually succumbed to her injuries.

A girl killed in a motorcycle crash in Union County Sunday has been identified by family as 11-year-old Laila Short.

Officials say the crash happened around 2 p.m. on Ridge Road near Roanoke Church Road.

Family spokesperson Erik Saxon says Short's cousin was taking her for a ride when they were hit by a pickup truck. Short was airlifted to the hospital and died, Saxon says. Short's cousin suffered a lacerated liver and an injured foot.

Saxon, director of Charlotte Junior Rugby, says Laila was a special player on and off the field.

She had been driving on the A815 when it appears the car lost control and crashed into a Vauxhall Vectra being driven by a 47-year-old man.

Asten was taken by air ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, where she later died.

HANOVER, Pa. (WHTM) – Police are looking for a driver who struck and killed a 4-year-old girl and didn’t stop.

Authorities say Dakota Wright died at Hanover Hospital after she was struck by a white, full-size utility van outside her home in the 200 block Princess Street just after 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Family members said they were getting out of their car after a trip to a fast food restaurant when the white van struck Dakota.

“She gets out of the car and I look back, I see her,” family friend Cameron Balmaceno said. “So, I turned my back and all I see is the car come and hear “boom, boom, boom.” I turned around and looked, and I don’t see Dakota.”

The family said the driver was going too fast and they weren’t able to get a license plate number.

“They need to man up,” said Troy Heath, a family friend. “He, she, whoever did it, just man up to what you did. There’s a lot of people hurting.”
