Warning: While there are no photos here (they are in the library and other sites), the following description of steps in recreating the construction and application of the tourniquet are gruesome.

1. The perp (he or she whatever) laid JonBenet face down on the carpet next to the paint tote. She must have been unconscious at this time, either asleep or stun gunned.

2. He broke off the ends of the paint brush to create the desired length of the "handle" that would rotate in the small nape at the back of her head.

3. Then he tied the fresh cord end onto the handle with a firm clove hitch.

4. He cut the cord to a specific length he had found by practicing before. This was no guessing game. The length of the cord had to equal the 1st wrap around the neck + the anchor knot and 4" stem + the 2nd wrap and some slack.

Note, alternatively he could have in advance prepared the garrote handle and cord (steps 2, 3, and 4) before bringing JonBenet down to the basement.

5. He wrapped the cord around the neck the 1st time, tied the slip knot which became the "anchor knot" and cinched it tight. He left 4" of tail off the anchor knot and 17" of cord from the anchor knot to the handle.

6. Then he pulled her up at a slight angle and wrapped the cord and handle around her neck clockwise the 2nd time. He had to pull her head up and slip the handle under because the 17" length of cord was designed to go around her neck (pi x neck diameter = 15" plus slack) and not her head. The slack cord of the 2nd wrap fell down to the lower left of her neck because of that slight angle. I credit Inspector Rex for discovering and explaining that to me. He has a photo which clearly illustrates it.

7. Then he put one end of the handle under the cord (and with that slack probably looped the cord around that end) and then began turning the handle clockwise to lock the tourniquet type garrote in place.

8. Then he continued turning the handle clockwise which gathered up the slack in the 2nd wrap and the torture began. Look closely at the detail photo of the paint brush handle with the cord tied to it. You will see hair coming up over the handle and then cork screwing to the right and coiling about the cord a number of times. That clearly proves that the handle was being turned clockwise to the right and gathering up shorter hair at the low back of her neck.

9. As the handle turned, it gathered up the slack and tightened the ligature on the lower left forward and upward causing that severe scraping and bruising plus petechia and ruptured vessels pooling in the triangular carotid muscle region. There was severe force here and no doubt she was unable to speak. As the constriction continued, the anchor knot was pulled counter clockwise to the back left of her neck. You can see in a photo how the cord intersects with the upper ligature line towards the anchor knot on the back left of her neck. This proves how turning the handle clockwise pulls on the cord counter clockwise around the neck. In essence it is shortening the 17" distance between the anchor knot and handle.

10. The handle was then turned to the left to lessen the pull on the cord and maybe allow JonBenet to catch some breath. Then it was turned to the right again. While this sadistic perp delighted in her struggle, JonBenet got less and less oxygen to her brain which caused hypoxic ischemia and then swelling of the brain and decrease in her heart rate. I credit Mama2JML for discovering and explaining that to me. Believe me folks it is all good science and can be elaborated and referenced in further posts.

11. After JonBenet went unconscious, the perp no longer had fun and hit her over the head in the top back of her head where arteries and veins are minimal. He probably hit her with something rubberized because the intent was to be bloodless. He didn't want a mess perhaps to minimize evidence and that's perhaps why the wiping down down of her crotch area.

The tourniquet garrote first explains the extensive petechia in her heart muscles and lung as well as on her neck, face and eyelids. That is a sure sign of strangulation. The ongoing torture by tourniquet garrote explains the duration of time which by hypoxic ischemia caused swelling of the brain and slowing of heart, thus low bleeding in the brain. The constriction device and location of head injury fit together with a sadistic perp who knows how to minimize blood evidence.

While researching Amy's book, I came across the Oakland County murders and noted their similarity to Amy's case. A couple cold case bloggers began circulating a rumor, at first unsubstantiated, that Lamborgine was a prime suspect in the Oakland County murders, and that a pedofile arrested in Michigan was providing police with clues that could link Lamborgine to the child porn ring, if not the murders themselves.
