A 9-year-old Autauga County girl died Sunday afternoon in an apparent accidental shooting, Sheriff Joe Sedinger confirmed.

Alyssa Davis, a student at Pine Level Elementary School, shot herself with a handgun, the sheriff said.

The shooting occurred about 1 p.m. at a home in the Laurel Hills neighborhood of the Pine Level community north of Prattville, he said

Davis was airlifted to the children's hospital in Birmingham but was pronounced dead from her injuries.

“This appears to be a very tragic accident, but this case is still under investigation. Our prayers go out to the family of Ms. Davis," Sedinger said in a statement.

Sedinger advised all parents to make sure firearms are locked away from children.

A first-year student at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota has tragically died after she fell ten stories from an apartment building.

Joia Simpson, 19, was attending a Halloween party in Dinkytown, Minneapolis earlier this week when she fell over two side-by-side railings from the 10th-floor apartment building, Minneapolis Fire Department Assistant Chief Bryan Tyner told the Star Tribune.

Simpson did not live at the residence and died at the scene, Tyner confirmed to the publication.

A 23-year-old college rower died suddenly of a rare bacterial infection, after brushing off her symptoms as tonsillitis.

Samantha Scott was an accomplished coxswain for the women’s rowing team at Kansas State University, when she started feeling pain and swelling in her throat two weeks ago.

Scott didn’t think too much of her symptoms, and by the time she went to the hospital it was too late to help. There, doctors diagnosed her with Lemierre’s syndrome, an extremely rare infection that starts with a sore throat and fever, and turns into swelling and pus that moves through the body. It’s not fully understood how the disease develops, but antibiotics are needed as soon as possible.

The college student, who was pursuing a degree in architectural engineering, died on Saturday.

“Samantha was a great leader for our program and more importantly a great person,” her rowing coach Patrick Sweeney said in a statement. “She was so well-liked by all of her teammates and had such a big impact on our program both on and off the water.”

Lucy's death is the latest tragedy to hit her family after her mum Nicola, 33, suffered an unexpected cardiac arrest six years ago.

Nicola was also 24 weeks pregnant with Lucy's baby sister Ruby, who only survived for 14 hours after an emergency Caeserian section.

Troopers said Alexi Moffitt, 17, of Fletcher, NC was traveling east in a 2008 Honda Civic when she lost control of her vehicle, crossed the center line and hit a 2002 Chevy Silverado.

Moffitt died at the scene, troopers said.

Police are desperately searching for a missing 23-year-old ballerina whose car was found abandoned on a boat ramp in a Missouri state park.

Raffaella Maria Stroik was reported missing on Tuesday after authorities spotted her vehicle in the Mark Twain State Park, about 120 miles north-west of St. Louis, a day earlier.

A park ranger had initially found the young woman’s black VW parked on the boat ramp on Monday, but no action was taken because there wasn’t a missing person’s report for Stroik in the system.

A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper found that Stroik’s car was still there the following morning.

Her personal belongings, including her cell phone, were found inside the locked car.  

There's no evidence of foul play, authorities said at a news conference.

Stroik was last seen Monday morning at a Whole Foods in Town and Country, just outside of St. Louis, authorities said.

She is a South Bend, Indiana, native who joined the Saint Louis Ballet Company in 2017, according to the company's website.

"We mourn the death of our friend and colleague Raffaella Maria Stroik. She was a wonderful dancer and a beautiful person," Gen Horiuchi, executive and artistic director of the Saint Louis Ballet, said in a statement. "We extend our condolences to her family."

An autopsy will determine her cause of death.

My sister Megan Maines was in a bad car accident Monday Nov 12th, which was my neice Chloe Maines 5th birthday. On the way to day care they were T-boned by another driver who tried to stop and couldn't because of the wet roads. Chloe was takin to Oshners/LSU Trama center. After several tests Chloe was diagnosed with a severed spinal cord at C-1 and her brain stem. As of now she is unable to move any of her extremities and is on a breathing machine

According to a Shreveport Police report, Maines was in a 2014 Nissan Maxima when the driver pulled into the turning lane on Youree Drive. The driver started to turn onto Sophia Lane when a woman driving south on Youree Drive struck the vehicle.

The crash report stated heavy rain was in the area at the time of the crash.
