A sudden snow squall created the 90-car pileup on I-275, and those conditions set off a chain reaction that claimed Sammy's life.

Jill Reagan said there were clear skies on Jan. 21, 2013, when the family decided to hit the slopes.

"Perfect day like today. Very cold," she said.

Then, out of nowhere, whiteout conditions made for treacherous travel. Two semitrailers were jackknifed in the middle of the road.

Reagan pulled over and took her two sons to safety. But her daughter, Sammy, was in the babysitter's car.

"I got a phone call from my babysitter saying Sammy's on the side of the road and she's unconscious and somebody's working on her, giving her CPR," Reagan said.

The cable barriers snapped and hit the 12 year-old in the back of her head, killing her.

The Kiltimagh native left Ireland on January 14 and had just begun working on a tomato farm.

She was making her way in for just her second day of work when tragedy struck.

Speaking to the Irish Sun, Amy’s heartbroken friend Nicole Williams described her as “a kind and gentle soul.”

She told how was "knocked for six" upon hearing of the tragedy, saying: “Amy was the loveliest and most genuine girl. She was always smiling and was always willing to do anything to help you.

Our beautiful Amy was taken from us too soon when she lost her life on 6th February in Australia.

Amy, 23, started an exciting new adventure to Australia in recent weeks. After giving up her job in retail in Castlebar, Co. Mayo before Christmas, Amy and her best friend left home to start their new lives in Melbourne Australia. After a few weeks of traveling the girls decided it was time to start their regional work just outside Melbourne. On Wednesday last, the girls were making their way to their second day of work when tragedy struck. Unfortunately Amy lost her life in a fatal road accident on that morning. Amy’s family are completely devasted with the loss of Amy and are desperately trying to get her home to Coolaght Claremorris as soon as possible.

Bell says counselors are available at the school today to help classmates and staff cope with the deaths of 16-year-old Alexis Myers and 15-year-old Danielle Nelson, who were killed in the I- 80 eastbound crash in East Lackawannock Township at around 6:30 pm.

State Police say snowy weather was a factor in a crash that claimed the lives of two Hickory High School students on Sunday.

Coroner John Libonati said there were four girls in the SUV.  They were traveling to a faith-based program at Grove City College.

The driver of the SUV lost control and spun out, according to police.  The car was then hit by a tractor-trailer.

Myers and Nelson died at the scene.

The girls were headed to a religious event at Grove City College, followed by a group of parents in another vehicle.
