A 20-year-old woman has died in a ski crash in closed terrain at a Denver ski resort, becoming the third fatality there in April alone, and the sixth this season.

Catherine Abeyta, known to friends as Catie, died after crashing into a tree on the Monte Criste run at Breckenridge Ski Resort Monday at 2.30 pm, according to The Denver Post.

The crash happened on the weekend of closing day, which marks the end of the ski season.

It's been a deadly April at Breck. New Jersey resident John Sherwood died there on April 4, and Frisco's David Carr passed away following an accident that took place just two days later, on April 6.

Nonetheless, the Summit County coroner reportedly determined that she suffered fatal blunt-force-trauma injuries as a result of the crash.

WILMINGTON, N.C., Oct. 30 — They were athletes, homecoming queens, aspiring lawyers and future doctors who took a few days off for a chance to spend a fun weekend with their closest college pals. But a sudden fire that erupted as they slept took them by surprise, and many of the college students would never make it out alive.

They included Allison Walden, a 19-year-old pre-med major who left a small town in Ohio for the warm weather and Greek life at the University of South Carolina. Her father said she spent her last night alive listening to music and partying with her friends.

She was one of seven fraternity and sorority members — most of them from the University of South Carolina, and at least one from Clemson University — who died early Sunday morning when an inferno consumed the beach house where they were staying on their weekend getaway in Ocean Isle Beach, a small resort community on the southern end of North Carolina.

“It sounded like they were having a good time,” Allison’s father, Terry Walden, told The Associated Press. “Unfortunately, the fire didn’t show any mercy. They probably never woke up.”

Six other students escaped but suffered minor injuries, including smoke inhalation, as they struggled to get out. One survivor, Tripp Wylie, a student at the University of South Carolina, said he woke up about 7 a.m. on Sunday to the sound of crackling and popping, then opened a window and saw flames shooting from the front of the house.

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio — More than 600 people crowded a suburban Cleveland church Saturday to remember a young Ohio woman, one of seven college students killed in a North Carolina beach house fire last weekend, a church minister said.

The 1 hour, 15 minute service at The Federated Church-United Church of Christ was a celebration of the life of Allison Walden, 19, a University of South Carolina sophomore who enrolled at the school because of the warm weather and the campus sorority scene.

Walden was recognized for her energetic and cheerful ways and her commitment to her studies.

"There was lots of laughter, and lots of tears," the Rev. Mark Simone said. "But it was difficult. It's been such a loss to the community."

Five other USC students and one student from Clemson University were killed in the Oct. 28 fire at a house in Ocean Isle Beach, where they had been spending the weekend. Six students from USC survived.

"It just boils down to this: It was a tragic accident," Simone said by phone after the service. "I told everyone that I don't know how to make sense of this. I don't believe God takes people. I believe he receives them."

Jerry Brewer, the university's associate vice president for student affairs, and a half dozen of Walden's sorority sisters traveled from South Carolina to attend the service, Simone said.

Justin Michael Anderson, 19, was laid to rest Saturday in Greenville, S.C. There was also a funeral service Saturday for Travis Lane Cale, 19, in Simpsonville, S.C.

Cassidy Fae Pendley, 18; Lauren Astrid Kristiana Mahon, 18; William Rhea, 18; and Emily Lauren Yelton, 18, also died in the house fire at 1 Scotland St.

Due to the extensive damage, it was impossible for investigators to uncover a definite cause, but they speculated that the blaze could have started from improperly discarded smoking materials, Ocean Isle Mayor Debbie Smith said Friday.

Abby Hoffman, 19, a Mountain Vista High School graduate and a freshman at Colorado State University, was driving south a couple of miles north of Mead when she lost control of her Jeep, causing the small car to roll over almost four times. She was coming home to Highlands Ranch.

So, too, was Roger Masterton, a sports cameraman with News4 in Denver. He had been in Fort Collins to shoot the green-gold scrimmage game. Masterton was a couple of car lengths ahead of Hoffman.

"I happened to glance back in the mirror," Masterton said. "The car went to the right shoulder, cut across both lanes and did a half 180 into the median."

The wire rope in the median kept Hoffman's Jeep in the southbound lanes, but the Jeep barrel-rolled.

"When you see this, as violent as the accident was, the first thing you think is, 'This is not going to be good,'" Masterton said.

He called 911 before stopping his own vehicle.

Traffic on the interstate stopped in both directions.

An off-duty paramedic, two off-duty police officers, Masterton - who was on a volunteer fire department as a young man and has some emergency medical training - and two other individuals stopped.

Hoffman was using a seat belt. Her rescuers found a sheet of plywood to use as a back board so they could begin compression on her to get her breathing. Her pulse was weak.

One ambulance stopped that was not equipped for lifesaving, but the crew did have a bag to help her breathing.

A Flight for Life helicopter arrived, and Masterton used his vehicle to stop traffic and create a landing pad. The ambulance was recalled. It was too late.

"If I could tell her parents anything, it's that she probably felt no pain. She was unconscious," Masterton said.

After returning to his car, he called his wife to tell her he loved her.

"This makes you realize you can't control what happens," Masterton said. "Abby was a vibrant 19-year-old and 10 seconds later, she's gone."

Masterton didn't learn the victim's name until two days later.

Bill Winter, a former coach of Hoffman's, was stunned by the news. He taught a strength, speed and conditioning class.

"Abby stands out to me even now, several years later, because she was so special," Winter said. "She was a very dedicated athlete, but she was just a wonderful human being. I never saw her without a smile, and it was the most amazing smile, too. She just seemed to love everyone. She didn't care if you were popular or an athlete or any of those groups. She just genuinely cared about everyone, and she had the ability to make everyone around her feel great."

An Arkansas woman who adopted her granddaughter after her son's death in Iraq stabbed the 7-year-old girl in the chest, then set fire to their home in a carefully planned murder-suicide.

Janice Robbins, 63, left a suicide note in her pickup truck at Conway before killing her granddaughter, Abby Robbins, and herself on Saturday, police said.

In the note, she wrote that she didn't want to leave the girl behind.
'Can't stand to see Abby left behind' and 'pray for my soul,' she wrote.
Authorities say that both Janice and Abby were alive during the fire because smoke was found in their lungs. Abby was stabbed once in the right side of her chest, but it's unclear if that wound would have been fatal.

The coroner determined that the both were killed by the smoke or fire, after finding soot in the girl's lungs that indicated she was breathing while the home burned, officials said.

Abby's father, Army Staff Sergeant William T. 'Terry' Robbins, was shot and killed by a fellow soldier in Iraq in 2005 during a dispute over alcohol. Shock said Janice Robbins had another son who had also died.

At a news conference on Monday, officials said there were no indications Robbins was in financial trouble, and investigators were trying to find out if she had been getting counseling for depression.

Janice Robbins had adopted Abby, with the process becoming final in 2010.

Shock said it appears Robbins planned her and her granddaughter's deaths very deliberately. She left the suicide note in the pickup truck, and taped an envelope to the side of the truck with keys so authorities could get inside, he said. She also left a plastic bin in the truck that contained her will and other personal effects.

'Seems to me that this was not an overnight reaction,' Shock said.

Bailey Belisle died at a Duluth hospital after being airlifted from the scene at Palisade Head, about 5 miles northeast of Silver Bay, Minn., along the Lake Superior shore.

She was visiting the popular North Shore landmark with another family, Lake County Sheriff Carey Johnson said.

“The girl was trying to look over the edge to see the water below. The other 14-year-old girl there, her friend, witnessed the fall,” Johnson said.

The friend told authorities that Belisle was trying to get her to come over to the edge and look at the water — and in a split-second she was gone.

The Lake County sheriff’s office received word of the incident shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday. Bystanders rappelled down the cliff and performed first aid in an effort to save Belisle.

An "academically gifted" law student died after a bag of ecstasy exploded in her stomach while on holiday in Ibiza, an inquest heard.

Spanish police began an investigation after the amount of the class-A drug in her system was "double the level" of a normal fatal dose.

A coroner said that nobody can give an explanation as to how the drugs ended up being in the teenager's system.

Nottingham Coroners' Court heard staff found Rebecca unresponsive in her room at the Hotel Marco Polo on September 28 last year.

Fighting back tears, Mrs Brock said her daughter would not have willingly taken the pills because she was unable to swallow tablets.

She revealed her daughter had openly talked about experimenting with cocaine in the past but did not think she would've taken so much ecstasy in one go.
Giving evidence, she said: "She tried cocaine with people she knew and people around her she knew.

"She said to her sister afterwards that she didn't like it so she didn't have to worry.

"She was very clear about what she let into her body and what she didn't.

"It was my understanding that there had been found material removed from her abdomen. It was described as a body pack.

"The medical examiner there said there had been a bag exploded.

"The major crime squad were investigating rather than the police because of how she was found.

The coroner said: "I'm also aware she established friendships in short periods of time.

"She had a close relationship with her family - especially with her sister.

"She had parties at her house where friends would come and go.

"She was an independent young woman, she was only 18 when she went to study abroad.

"She was a very gifted young woman - academically gifted. She didn't seem to struggle with exams and school work.

"She did have some issues relating to her physical health. She had some body image issues, undergoing other possible conditions.

"She was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome in 2015. There was a remarkable, significant loss of weight in the summer of 2015."

The inquest was also told that outside of school she enjoyed dance, drama and singing - she had high expectations of herself.

In July 2015 she had gone to Ibiza and she went again in August - so September was the third trip.

The coroner continued: "In July when she attended with her sister, Anika, she did try cocaine - this was not unusual for young people going to Ibiza.

"Her sister had not taken up the offer of cocaine.

"The reality is in July she had experimented.

"The trip to Ibiza in September, Becky had been taken to university in Holland and she was keen to experience the closing down parties and end of season parties. She had two friends celebrating birthdays in Ibiza.

"How these bags were in her stomach we will never know.

"On this trip to Ibiza nobody actually saw Becky take drugs at the time - that is my understanding.

"What is plain is that nobody can give an explanation as to how this came into her system."

oxicologist Dr Stephen Morley said Spanish authorities had found that Becky had died around 48 hours before she was found in her room.

He said traces of alcohol and a "potentially fatal concentration" of ecstasy were found in her body.

He added: "The Spanish toxicologist detected 0.54g per litre of alcohol in Becky's system.

"It would be consistent with Becky having a few drinks on the evening of September 22.

"There is certainly evidence of a broken bag.

"She would have died around half-an-hour from when (ecstasy) entered her blood stream to when she died - that is working on the assumption that she has never taken it before.

"She would probably begin to feel very unwell.

"There was evidence of an acute MDMA dosage - a potentially fatal concentration.

"The most likely cause of death is ecstasy toxicity. The level of MDMA was double the reported fatal level."

Pathologist Dr Derek Robson added: "The blood next to her head doesn't lead me to believe she suffered trauma.

"It is likely that death occurred a few hours after the package burst."

British teenager died in Ibiza after five bags of ecstasy exploded in her stomach, finds coroner

Friday night authorities say a driver going the wrong way struck the vehicle their daughters were in on Highway 29 near Bonduel.

It is suspected that the driver of the other vehicle was intoxicated as the vehicle crossed the grass median and struck the car that the girls were in.

A teenage girl was killed after a three-vehicle crash in Graves County, Kentucky on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Morgan Green, 16, of Mayfield, died at Vanderbilt Hospital on Thursday, Aug. 31 from injuries sustained in the crash.

According to authorities, Green was traveling west on East Tucker Road on Tuesday when, for an unknown reason, she failed to yield the right of way at the intersection of Highway 303. As Green crossed the intersection her car was struck by two vehicles.

The first vehicle to hit Green's was driven by Paul Ferguson, of Wingo, Kentucky. The second vehicle to hit Green was driven by Manuel Allerano, of Mayfield,

A SHATTERED family is mourning the death of a ­bubbly young hairdresser who they say was one of three people killed in a horrific CBD car crash.

Northern Beaches woman Bree Keller, 22, has been revealed by her family as the third victim of the crash in inner-Sydney on Saturday morning when a $200,000 Nissan GT-R R35 in which she was travelling left the road and burst into flames after the driver lost control at Darling Harbour.

“She was a lovely, bubbly person ... she was a free spirit and we miss her dearly,” her stepfather Peter Francis said.
“We keep thinking of when she is going to walk in the door ... but she is never going to walk in the door again. Bree was a very attractive girl, both inside and out. She had never been in trouble. She was a delight to be with and had lots of friends.”

Tributes have already started to pour in for Keller this morning.

“RIP Bree, so glad I got to speak to you the day before. Rest easy beautiful. Until we meet again,” Hayden Zuffo wrote on Instagram.

Paige Schmutz wrote: “The last few days have been torture. The world is at a loss without you. I miss you so much beautiful.”

“Absolutely heartbroken! RIP gorgeous girl,” another said

Mr Francis said the family was still trying to work out how Ms Keller came to be in the high-performance vehicle, which had been purchased just six days ­before the crash.

“We have no idea who these people were,” Mr Francis said.

“We knew she was going out, but we didn’t know where, she is 22 years old.”

A 9-year-old Millcreek Township girl has died from injuries she suffered when a tree branch struck her in the head as she was playing in the backyard of a house on Sept. 2.

JamieLynn Arnold died on Monday after she was taken off life support at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, her mother, Laura Higby, said on Wednesday.

“She was in the wrong place at the wrong time” Higby said. “It was a terrible accident.”

Higby said her daughter, one of six children, was injured while she was with her siblings in the backyard of their father’s house in the 2600 block of Caughey Road. The branch fell from a large tree, Higby said.

“All the kids were at play in the yard,” she said. “It broke off and came down.”

Erie County 911 said the accident was reported at 6:19 p.m., and that JamieLynn was taken to UPMC Hamot in critical condition.

Higby said her daughter underwent surgery at Hamot to relieve swelling of her brain and was immediately flown to Children’s Hospital.

“They did what they could,” Higby said of the physicians.

She said JamieLynn was in fourth grade at Grandview Elementary School in Millcreek.

“She was just sassy, fun-loving,” Higby said.

She said her daughter’s organs were donated and had “already helped three people.”

A five-year-old girl died suddenly just hours after playing with pals at a birthday party, it has emerged.

Little Maja Dlowacki, who was in junior infants class at Carrigtwohill, Cork, passed away suddenly on Tuesday night.

Woodstock High School cheerleader Madilyn Taylor Phillips, 16, of Ball Ground was killed in a two-vehicle car crash on Ball Ground Highway Friday morning, according to police.
Phillips was killed when Jerymie Thurman, 37, of Cartersville, who was driving a Kenworth flatbed truck northbound on Ball Ground Highway about 7:27 a.m., hit a Buick Lacrosse at the intersection of East Cherokee Drive, spokeswoman Sgt. Marianne Kelley said.

“Preliminary investigation shows that the driver of the Buick Lacrosse, a 16-year-old juvenile, was making a left hand turn from East Cherokee Drive onto Ball Ground Highway when they were struck by the Kenworth flatbed truck,” she said.
Phillips was declared dead at the scene and the driver of the truck was transported to WellStar Kennestone Regional Medical Center, Kelley said.

Shortly before 7:30 a.m., deputies responded to Ball Ground Highway at East Cherokee Drive, which is south of the city of Ball Ground, Kelley said. They learned Phillips was making a left turn when the truck hit her.

The truck, driven by Jerymie Thurman, 37, of Cartersville, was northbound on Ball Ground Highway at the time, Kelley said.

Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Cherokee County School District released a statement about the incident.

“We join the Woodstock High School community in mourning the tragic loss of one of its Wolverines,” the statement read. “We have sent our crisis response team to the school to provide additional counseling and support for students and staff. Changes could be coming to a dangerous intersection after a 16-year-old Cherokee County girl died last week while on her way to school.

Channel 2’s Chris Jose has learned there have been more than a dozen crashes in the last three years at the intersection where Madilyn Phillips was killed while driving to Woodstock High School.

According to the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office, Phillips collided with a truck at the intersection of Ball Ground Highway and East Cherokee Drive. Investigators say Phillips was attempting a left turn when the crash happened.
"We had seven accidents reported at that intersection last year in 2016, and four accidents in 2015," said Marianne Kelley, with the Cherokee Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office says traffic lights or better signage could make the road safer.

Emily was an eighth-grader at Rawlinson Middle School, where she was involved in several extra-curricular activities, Northside ISD officials said.

The driver of the car was also taken to University Hospital.

Police said the driver of the Jeep was not intoxicated.

Emily Zaltsman, 13, loved to swim and was a volleyball player at Rawlinson Middle School.

"It's just really sad that somebody who really tries and is a good person, that happens, it's really sad " eighth-grader Charly Aide said.

Friends took to social media to remember Emily, who had her Bat Mitzvah back in April. Classmates said she swam and played on the volleyball team and had just finished up a volleyball game when tragedy struck.

Police say around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Zaltsman was riding in the back seat of a vehicle that was stuck in traffic in an eastbound lane on Northwest Loop 1604. That's when an SUV slammed into the back of the vehicle.

Zaltsman suffered severe head trauma and was taken to University Hospital, where she later died.

"I know that she was a bubbly and just a sweet person, and I heard how smart she was and how pretty she was, and she had so much going for her. It's just really sad," said Charly Aide, an eighth-grader at Rawlinson.

Her heartbroken mum, Ria, 36, initially thought that the horse-loving youngster had grazed the left side of her stomach when she complained about pain on February 18 last year.

She counted 24 doctors and nurses working frantically to give her CPR for more than 40 minutes, but they could not save her.
"It was just like she had the flu, and she was gone," her mother said.
The Fort Worth Independent School District released a statement that did not name Chloe's school for privacy reasons, but said custodians had thoroughly cleaned the school with sanitizers.
Chloe was in the eighth grade at Leonard Middle School, her mother said.

Margaret Cuthrell was driving a Honda Odyssey van east on U.S. 264 when she attempted to turn left on to Lizzard Slip Road. The van was hit on its right side by a Jeep Wrangler that was traveling west on U.S. 264, according to the highway patrol.

Emmie, of Worksop, Notts, was diagnosed with the condition last year after she fractured her shoulder doing a cartwheel at school.

After undergoing physiotherapy for the fracture, a lump appeared on her arm the size of an egg and scans later revealed that it was a cancerous sarcoma.

The toddler was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma — a rare form of liver cancer — a few days before her second birthday.

Her cancer was treated successfully at the Alberta Children's Hospital, but when it returned in August 2016, her parents were told palliative care was the only option left for the little girl.

The family turned to the United States, where a doctor at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital told the family a liver transplant could work for Greta, who was denied a transplant in Alberta because her odds of survival were not high enough.

The family embarked on a campaign to raise half of the estimated $1 million US cost to fund the surgery and treatment. Their GoFundMe page had raised more than $300,000 as of Wednesday.

Cancer spread

Greta got a new liver in early May — less than 24 hours after the family arrived in the U.S. While the surgery went well, the family was told spots were found in Greta's lungs just over a month later, which indicated the cancer had spread.

Greta and her family came back to Calgary to continue her cancer fight at the Alberta's Children's Hospital.

In August, her family was told the tumours in her lungs had grown and multiplied, and chemotherapy was not working.
After a trip to Disneyland in late August, Greta was hospitalized. In a post on the Greta's Guardians Facebook post last week, the family said Greta's disease had "progressed significantly and quickly," but the family was determined to keep fighting.

In a Facebook post Tuesday night, Greta's mother wrote, "It's hard to say the words 'my child is going to die,' but here we are, saying them and living in the hell that comes with that reality."

“I was taken in a car to Basildon Hospital and waited for quite a while for her - she had gone into cardiac arrest at the side of the road but they got her back.

“She had a second cardiac arrest just before she got to the hospital. When they brought her in they called me in and they were working so hard.

“They broke her ribs they were trying so hard. It was horrific.”

Sherie-Lea’s death is made even more tragic by the fact she had battled liver cancer and survived a liver transplant when she was just three-years-old.

Ms James said: “When she was 20 weeks old we found out she had hepatoblastoma - liver cancer - and a 6lb tumour and she started chemotherapy the next week.

“She eventually got a liver transplant from a little boy who had died in Spain, the RAF flew it over.

“Normally it takes ten to 12 hours for the surgery but it fitted her like a glove and only took 45 minutes.”

But the illness meant Sherie-Lea, who would have turned 16 last Wednesday, had a lower immune system so when she caught a bug she would get it much worse than anyone else.

Ms James said: “This year had been the best six months of her life, she was fit and healthy and looked amazing.

“She had been on holiday with her friends and was just living her life.

“We were planning a big trip to America to see family when she finished her GCSEs.

“It’s just so tragic, I still can’t believe she is gone really.”

Although Ms James is still waiting for the results of a toxicology report, Sherie-Lea’s death is believed to be drugs-related and her mother has been told she may have taken ecstasy.

A 10-year-old was helping her mom with the horses. Then she got kicked in the head

A 10-year-old girl from outside Waco, Texas was killed Monday when she was kicked in the head by one of her family’s horses.

According to KBTX, Emmie Schneider was helping her mother with the family’s animals on their property, along with her 6-year-old brother. She was kicked in the face by the animal she was working with, according to McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara.

He told KBTX that the force of the kick broke Schneider’s neck and she died on the scene. There will not be an autopsy performed, according to the Waco Tribune-Herald.

"It's a very sad, tragic accident," McNamara said. "It really is heartbreaking."

Claire Esther Davis, a senior at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colo., was critically injured when student Karl Halverson Pierson, 18, entered the school building on Dec. 13 armed with a shotgun and Molotov cocktail bombs.

In a statement posted on the Littleton Adventist Hospital's Facebook page, officials said Claire's injuries "were too severe and the most advanced medical treatments could not prevent this tragic loss of life."

The teen passed away at 4:29 p.m. local time (6:29 p.m. ET).

"Claire’s death is immensely heartbreaking for our entire community, our staff and our families," the statement added.

Her family thanked the community for its support and asked for privacy as they grieve the death of their daughter.

"Last week was truly a paradox in that we lost our daughter, yet we witnessed the wonderful love that exists in the world through the tremendous outpouring of support we received," read a statement posted by the Davis family on the hospital's Facebook page.

   Val was shot before her exchange about God. Dylan pointed his shotgun under her table and fired several rapid bursts, killing Lauren Townsend and injuring Val and another girl. Val was riddled with shotgun pellets up and down her arms and torso. Dylan walked away.

Twelve-year-old Emma Raymondo was walking with her siblings after getting ice cream at Sheetz on Friday night and was only a few yards from their Palmer Township home when she was hit by a car, her mother said Saturday.

She died at the hospital a couple hours later.

A student at Easton Area Middle School, Emma stood out academically and earned a yellow belt in karate, according to her mother, Kayleen Raymondo.

Emma would often stay behind after her karate lessons to help coach some of the younger martial artists, Raymondo said outside their home in the 3400 block of Nazareth Road — the same block where Emma was hit.

“She was a leader,” Raymondo added. “She volunteered time helping those below her classes.”

Emma was walking on the shoulder of Nazareth Road, just south of Kingston Road past the Sheetz gas station, when she was hit by a southbound vehicle at 8:11 p.m., according to township detective Jim Alercia.

The driver remained on the scene and cooperated with police, he added. Alercia said he would not identify the driver as the investigation continues. He gave no indication what caused the accident.

Raymondo said Emma was walking with her younger siblings — a brother, sister and stepbrother — and that the children told her they were on the grass, not on the shoulder, as they headed home.

She said Emma, being the oldest, was closest to the road and was hit from behind. Raymondo said she believes Emma was walking on the outside to shield her siblings from any passing cars.

“She was the best, most perfect kid in the world,” Raymondo said.
After the car hit Emma, her brothers and sister screamed for help. Emma’s stepfather ran outside and found her on the neighbor’s lawn, two houses from their home, family members said.

“All my kids saw my daughter die,” Raymondo said.

Emma was taken by ambulance to Easton Hospital and then transferred to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, where she was pronounced dead at 10:38 p.m., the Lehigh County coroner’s office said. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Two little girls were struck by a vehicle in Emmaus, Lehigh County on Monday, killing one and critically injuring the other.

Police say 11-year-old Abigail Zukowski, a fifth grader at Jefferson Elementary School, is dead.

Abigail was walking with her other close friend, 10-year-old Mya Walrath, who was critically injured.

The girls were hit by a vehicle yesterday afternoon while crossing the intersection of 6th and Chestnut streets.

Their friend Arlie Hoffman spoke of Abigail, saying, "She was someone special."

Arlie says the most chilling part is that she was supposed to be with Abigail and Mya when the accident happened.

"It heart broke me knowing I just saw her the other day. I was supposed to hang out with her, and it tears me inside," she said.

Meanwhile, Mya's grandmother, Elaine Jackson, tells us there's no update tonight on her granddaughter's prognosis, who remains in critical condition at Lehigh Valley Hospital.

Elaine says, "It is a head fracture. We don't know if there's going to be any brain damage yet... too early to tell."

Witnesses say the driver did stop and was processed by police.

DA: No criminal charges to be filed in fatal Emmaus crash

alling the death of Abbie Zukowski a "tragic accident," Lehigh County authorities said Friday the driver who hit and killed the 11-year-old as she and a friend crossed a busy Emmaus street "could not have avoided" the girls.

For the first time, authorities identified the driver as 82-year-old Richard S. Schaffer of Coopersburg, who police said was driving within the speed limit and had a green light May 18 as he approached Sixth and Chestnut streets.

Police said Abbie was hit and killed by Schaffer's vehicle and her friend, 10-year-old Mya Walrath, was injured.

Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin, in a news release, said no charges will be filed. He said the investigation showed Schaffer "could not have avoided this tragic accident," when the girls "suddenly either walked out or [based on some witnesses] ran out into the intersection."

Schaffer's vehicle had no mechanical problems, he was not using a cellphone and he volunteered for blood testing, authorities said. Those blood tests showed Schaffer was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Authorities said several witnesses were in vehicles traveling along both Sixth and Chestnut streets.

The girls were standing at the intersection's southwest corner "engaged in conversation," when they either walked or ran north into Chestnut Street.

Schaffer's car hit the girls in the eastbound lane of the street, authorities said. Schaffer's 77-year-old wife, Kathryn, was in the passenger seat.

Police said Schaffer's car was traveling 30-35 mph at the time of the crash. The speed limit on Chestnut Street is 35 mph.

Schaffer's cellphone showed no evidence of any phone calls or text messages in the time period leading up to the accident, police said.

Schaffer's vehicle had minor damage, consistent with "low-impact speed," authorities said. A mechanical inspection of the car showed it had no problems that would have contributed to the crash.

State police said the "black box" in Schaffer's car that records information at the time of a crash showed "no data was able to be extracted" because the impact was not severe enough.

Nine witnesses were interviewed by police. Police also examined video surveillance recordings from a nearby convenience store and a school bus that was traveling several cars behind Schaffer's car.

"In neither case does the video show the actual impact," the news release states, adding the video was able to corroborate that Schaffer was not speeding.

"Both the Emmaus Police Department and the Lehigh County district attorney's office extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Abigail Zukowski and our best wishes for a full recovery to Mya Walrath," the release states.

Lehigh County jury this week found that an 82-year-old driver was not negligent when his car hit and killed 11-year-old Abbie Zukowski as she and a friend crossed an Emmaus street in 2015.

The verdict came following a weeklong trial in a wrongful death lawsuit filed against Richard S. Schaffer by Abbie’s parents last year. Schaffer, of Coopersburg, died in August. Attorney Chuck Daly represented Schaffer’s estate.

“This was a tragic incident that deeply affected both families,” Daly said. “Now that the trial is over, I truly hope that they can find closure and move on.”

Schaffer was not criminally charged in the fatal crash, which Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin called “a tragic accident.” Martin said Schaffer could not have avoided hitting the girls.

Abbie’s parents, Christopher and Lisa Zukowski, filed a wrongful death suit against Schaffer in March 2016 in Lehigh County Court asking for more than $50,000 in damages, according to court records.

Twenty-one-year-old Alexandra Marie Ciarcia from Pleasantville, NY died Thursday night. Police say she was found in a sorority house and was having a medical issue.

The Chariho community is mourning the sudden death of senior Maddie Potts, captain of the girls’ soccer team, who collapsed on the field during a game Saturday night and was later pronounced dead at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence.

Maddie is the daughter of Dan Potts, a science teacher at Chariho Middle School.

Reached Sunday, a shaken Superintendent of Schools Barry Ricci said he had left the hospital Saturday night believing that Potts would recover and found out early Sunday morning that she had passed away, the victim of a brain aneurysm.
“I cannot believe it,” he said. “We left the hospital at about 11:30, and I left thinking she was going to make it.”

Chariho was playing Middletown when the tragedy occurred. Ricci said Potts was taking a penalty kick when she suddenly went down.

“She was kicking a penalty kick, and she just collapsed,” he said. “Everything that could be done for her on the field was done. There was a parent who was a doctor who resuscitated her.”

The girls’ soccer team held an emergency meeting on Sunday morning, and members of the boys’ team joined them as a gesture of support. Chariho Director of Administration Susan Rogers contacted members of the School Committee Sunday morning to tell them the news.

“She was always at School Committee meetings, getting awards,” committee member Catherine Giusti said. “She was a wonderful kid. What a tragic loss for the parents and for the community.”

Potts, 17, was a resident of Richmond and played on both the soccer and lacrosse teams.
