One difference is that Lou Smit believes an intruder used a stun gun.

Mr Cruel did not use a stun gun, though he did use a gun on Karmein Chan, shooting her in the head 3 times at point blank range



one thing to keep in mind is that Karmein Chan was brought to a field alive outdoors in a remote area and shot, whereas Jonbenet was presumably killed in her own home, so a gun would make too much noise.
