A devastated mum whose daughter was struck by a ‘silent killer’ that experts says kills at least 12 a week and mainly affects healthy young people is warning others about the cruel condition.
Hilary Nicholls, who lost her daughter Clarissa in May, says there were no signs before she suddenly collapsed on a hike in France. The 20-year-old from London was a national runner and had been sporty from a young age. Two weeks after her death, doctors realised she had an undiagnosed heart condition.

Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy
Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is an inherited heart disease.[1]
ACM is caused by genetic defects of parts of the cardiac muscle known as desmosomes, areas on the surface of muscle cells which link them together. The desmosomes are composed of several proteins, and many of those proteins can have harmful mutations.

A rising high school junior died recently while attending a cheer camp at Texas A&M.
Callie Mitchell, 16, was airlifted to Texas Children's Hospital after a coach performed CPR at the campus where she later died.
Scott says Mitchell "probably" went into a cardiac arrest that was caused by the condition. Long QT is detectable by electrocardiogram (EKG), which is optional during athletic physicals in Texas.
Mitchell's father is now urging parents to get EKGs for their kids.

have put heart disease in the spotlight. The news of both passing away from heart issues has forced the public to face the question – “Is anyone too young for heart disease?”.
The reality is, heart problems can strike at any age.
Sadly, Félicité and Lotte lost their lives to sudden cardiac events at very young ages, and with reasons that we may not ever know. With Félicité passing from a heart attack

Chloe Longster, a 13-year-old girl death of sepsis and cardiac arrest
13-year-old Chloe Longster had a "magnetic personality" according to her family, who rushed her to hospital in November 2022
A coroner has ruled that neglect and a series of failures at an NHS hospital contributed to the death of a 13-year-old girl, who had pneumonia and sepsis.
Chloe Longster, from Market Harborough in Leicestershire, died in November 2022 one day after being admitted to Kettering General Hospital in Northamptonshire.
Her mother told the inquest into her death that Chloe was previously healthy, but after the administration of painkillers and antibiotics was delayed, her daughter had asked whether she was going to die.
The University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN) NHS Group apologised to her family and said it had made "a number of changes since Chloe’s death" to improve sepsis screening.
hloe, who had no serious underlying health conditions, was admitted to the Skylark children’s ward on 28 November 2022 with chest pain and flu-like symptoms.
Checks that might have alerted doctors to sepsis were not carried out and treatment was delayed, according to evidence presented this week.
Chloe's mother, Louise Longster, told the inquest that her daughter was "wincing and squirming" from pain while in hospital.
She said: "Chloe asked if she could be put to sleep because it was unbearable. I remember thinking how pale and clammy she looked.
"It's harrowing to see your own child in so much pain."
She said she felt that she was being a "nuisance" and "dramatic" because she was trying to get more help for her daughter.
The inquest heard how a routine check was missed and Chloe also waited hours for intubation, despite a registrar recording that she needed more oxygen.
A paediatric expert who carried out an independent review highlighted poor communication between departments and delayed antibiotic delivery.
She added that the hospital had "rolled out a robust training programme and an audit programme" for the screening and treatment of sepsis.

At an inquest which concluded at Northampton Coroner’s Court on Friday, assistant coroner Sophie Lomas said there were several key missed opportunities to save Chloe Longster’s life.
The missed opportunities identified in the inquest include delays to her sepsis screening and treatment, and delays to prescribe and administer the correct antibiotics.
Chloe, from Market Harborough in Leicestershire, was taken by her mother to the emergency department of Kettering General Hospital in Northamptonshire on November 28 2022 with “severe” pain in her ribs.
She had been suffering with a cough and other mild cold-like symptoms in the few days prior to her death, but the illness “didn’t interrupt her usual activities”, Chloe’s mother said.
In hospital, her condition deteriorated and she was later transferred from the paediatric ward, Skylark, to the intensive care unit (ICU), where she was intubated and she died the following morning after around 30 minutes of CPR while she was in cardiac arrest.
Chloe’s mother, Louise Longster, said her daughter “asked to be put to sleep” in the hospital because the pain was “unbearable”.
Mrs Longster told the inquest on the first day of evidence: “Chloe asked me on Skylark if she was going to die. It’s haunting that the 13-year-old was the one that was right. It’s devastating.”

Matilda Pritchard 11-year-old girl
An 11-year-old girl died in her sleep from a heart attack — the result of an undiagnosed and very rare heart condition.
O
n the morning of April 3, 2024, Matilda Pritchard’s parents found her unresponsive in her bed. Paramedics called to their home in the English town of Pudsey were unable to revive her.
But her parents later learned Matilda had an undiagnosed heart condition: arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVD), a rare disease in which fatty or fibrous tissue replaces damaged heart muscle, causing it to contract weakly and impacting the flow of blood.
People with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy can experience symptoms such as heart palpitations, fainting, breathlessness, swelling as well as pain and discomfort in the chest.
However, it can sometimes show no symptoms at all, or the can only appear as a person ages, though it can still kill even if no signs are present.
The condition is usually diagnosed using scans to examine the size of the heart as well as tests to measure if it is beating in a normal rhythm.
There is no cure for arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, also called arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, but treatments are available.
