The two were reportedly headed to Chireno to watch a high school baseball game when the crash occurred.

Sergeant David Hendry with the Texas Department of Public Safety in Lufkin says it happened shortly before 6 p.m. March 23 on State Highway 103 at Farm to Market Road 1277, about 13 miles southwest of San Augustine.

Sergeant Hendry said Reynolds was driving a 2016 Kia passenger car north on FM 1277 when she failed to stop at a stop sign at Highway 103. The Kia headed into the path of a 2008 GMC SUV that was eastbound on Highway 103 and struck the Kia on the driver side.

Reynolds died at the scene. Her passenger, Byrum, was flown by medical helicopter to a Tyler hospital for treatment.

The driver of the SUV, Joe Worry, 37, of San Augustine, was transported by ambulance to a Lufkin hospital for treatment.

As emergency crews were working the initial accident, Sergeant Hendry said a second accident occurred involving an 18-wheeler.

Hendry said the driver of a Freightliner truck-tractor semi-trailer was traveling eastbound on Highway 103 when he came upon the accident scene and took evasive action to the right, striking a parked Chevrolet pickup truck on the side of the roadway.

Hendry said no injuries resulted from the second crash.

Tomashosky's car caught fire on the driver's side, so she tried to escape from the passenger side.

But as she exited the car she stepped on the active line and was killed,

Witnesses tried to help the 17-year-old but one man was shocked as he stepped in a puddle near the car.

Even after police arrived the power was still live so they could not get out of their vehicles to help Tomashosky.

Crews had to turn off electricity in the neighborhood while they removed that wire and tree from the road.

Tomashosky, who went by the name 'Val,' was a senior set to graduate in June and attend Pasco-Hernando State College in the fall,

Deputies responded to the crash shortly before 8 a.m. at 175th Street and Four Corners Road, which is west of Gardner in rural Johnson County, said Shelby Colburn, public information officer for the sheriff’s office.

A driver’s maroon SUV, which was carrying three children, was struck in the intersection by a roofing truck heading west, which pushed the SUV into another truck, Colburn said. That truck then struck a van.

The driver and two of the children in the SUV were taken to a hospital for injuries described as not life threatening, Colburn said.

As vehicles were still being towed away, Colburn told reporters at the scene that the child’s death was a “tragedy.”

Officials have not confirmed Sarah died of COVID-19. But as cases continue to surge in Alberta — currently the province with the highest rate of new daily infections in the country — Strate said he is convinced she died because of a variant of the virus.

"It's always just been numbers until you can put a face to it ... Now one is my daughter," Strate, a school teacher, said Wednesday.

"I haven't even been able to go on. I've had a thousand messages of condolences and I can't get to them because I'm gonna start crying."

Sarah was three classes away from graduation and was excited to attend college in Lethbridge to become a masseuse, her father said.

The second youngest of the family's five children was also the life of the party, he said.

"She loved to sing and dance. She was a pianist. She did percussion in band. She was a drummer."

He said more than a week ago, Sarah's 20-year-old sister tested positive for COVID-19 and Sarah started complaining about a sore throat days later. She was booked to get a COVID-19 test on Wednesday.

Sarah was isolating in the basement of the family's home. On Monday, Strate says her health went downhill.

"She started to go delirious and was starting to lose focus on what reality was. So I said, 'We got to call 9-1-1.'"

Strate said they waited about 20 minutes for an ambulance. During that time, he talked to Sarah. Her arms shook as she lay on the floor.

"We talked about being strong and how much we loved her and, you know, whatever our Father and heavens will is will happen," Strate said.

"We never expected her to die."

Strate said a medical examiner told him Sarah had actually been sick for three weeks. A lab test is being done to see if she was infected with a COVID-19 variant.

"They say her lung was really hard and heavy. And I said, 'How does that happen within a couple of days?' "They can't explain it."

After her death, Strate said many people reached out to tell him that Sarah had saved their kids lives as a leader with Hope Squad, a peer-to-peer suicide prevention program.

He said Sarah's death should also be a reminder for everyone to take the pandemic seriously.

Dr Danbury said: 'Time is absolutely of the essence when you get to that sort of situation.

'She had been in cardiac arrest for nine minutes before they (paramedics) arrived to assess her. The time of the assessment was 8.26am.

'Nine minutes of cardiac arrest due to septic shock is a very, very long time.'
