An accomplished gymnast at Southern Connecticut State University has died following a serious spinal cord injury suffered in a training accident.

Melanie Coleman, 20, of Milford, Connecticut, was training Friday at New Era Gymnastics in Hamden when she was injured, said her mother, Susan Coleman.

She was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and died Sunday

Schmidt became sick over the weekend and went into sepsis by Monday evening, according to Facebook posts from her mother, Katerina Schmidt. On the way to a Green Bay hospital, her daughter became unresponsive, so the mom performed CPR. Schmidt was eventually transferred to Children's Hospital in Milwaukee.

Schmidt was a straight-A student in her freshman year at Bay Port High School who had just received a 99% on a recent exam and told her dad she could have gotten 100%, according to her obituary and the GoFundMe page created by her godmother, Kerry Reis.
Ava Schmidt died Wednesday from influenza, marking the state's second pediatric death this flu season. Schmidt loved animals, including her dog, Finley.

Ava Rae Schmidt, 14, Suamico, passed away unexpectedly on December 21, 2022, after a short series of infections. Born on February 16, 2008, in Green Bay, she is the daughter of Michael and Katerina (Sivas) Schmidt. Ava was currently a freshman at Bay Port, where she was a hardworking straight-A student and was involved in DECA. She had a passion for dance, and her dance family at Forever Dance Studio played a big part of her life. Ava will forever be known for having a huge heart, and this was displayed in the love that she shared with others while babysitting and caring for pets. Her hobbies included shopping, painting, and spending time with her family, especially her grandparents, cousins, and sister. Ava was the best big sister ever.

Abbie’s family is working to keep the memory of her alive. Earlier in December, the 14-year-old came down with type A influenza.

It started as a cough and a fever. Less than a week later, Abbie was dead.

Abbie died on Dec. 19 with a blood clot in her heart. Hauler said the doctor told her blood clots happen in rare cases of influenza A.

“We’ve all been sick. We’ve all been under the weather,” said Hauler. “No one ever thinks when they get sick or their child gets sick with a cold that you’re going to lose them.”

Abbie’s death is the first from the flu in Franklin County in 2022, according to the county public health agency. A Franklin County Public Health spokesperson said the last pediatric flu death in the county was in 2019.
