A British teenager has died after falling out of a plane in Madagascar.

Alana Cutland, from Milton Keynes, reportedly fell more than 1,000 metres to her death while travelling in a light aircraft last week during an internship on the Indian Ocean island.

The 19-year-old’s “heartbroken” family paid tribute to the “bright, independent young woman” who had a “thirst for discovering more of the world”.

Local police are investigating whether the Cambridge University student deliberately threw herself to her death from the tiny two-door plane after carrying out research in the remote area of Anjajavy last Thursday.

Her body has not yet been recovered.

It was reported Ms Cutland, from Milton Keynes, suffered "paranoia attacks" while on the self-funded but "failed" research trip to the island, off the east coast of Africa.

Investigators said the student suffered five "paranoia attacks" while on the "failed" research trip which she funded herself.

Alana is understood to have fought off fellow passenger, Brit tourist Ruth Johnson, who had battled for several minutes to try to keep her in the aircraft.

The tiny propeller plane was rocking through the air as Ruth – the only other passenger – and the pilot grappled onto Alana’s leg in a bid to stop her death plunge.

But local cops said the 19-year-old managed to free herself from their “exhausted” grip high above the paradise Indian Ocean island, before falling into the wild savannah below.
Mr Nomenjahary said: “The Cessna C168 aircraft was taking off from Anjajavy with three people aboard, including Ms Johnson, Alana and the pilot.

“After 10 minutes of flight, Alana undid her seatbelt and unlocked the right door of the plane and tried to get out.

“Ms Johnson fought for five minutes trying to hold her, but when she was exhausted and out of breath she let go.

“Alana then intentionally fell from an aircraft at 1130 meters above sea level.

“She dropped into a zone which is full of with carnivorous Fossa felines.”

Although it is unclear at this stage, it is likely the aircraft attempted to turn around when Alana first attempted to jump.

However it is believed the plane could not land straight away as it had to burn off fuel before attempting to touch down so soon after take off.
Investigators will be frantically mapping the area to narrow down an area where her body may be.
BODY MAY NEVER BE FOUND

Alana had been due to stay on the research trip for six weeks, but cut it short after eight days after speaking to her parents Alison and Neil Cutland, both 63.

Yesterday her parents paid tribute to their daughter.

In a statement released by the Foreign and Commonwealth officer, they said: “Our daughter Alana was a bright, independent young woman, who was loved and admired by all those that knew her.

“She was always so kind and supportive to her family and friends, which resulted in her having a very special connection with a wide network of people from all walks of her life, who we know will miss her dearly.

“Alana grasped every opportunity that was offered to her with enthusiasm and a sense of adventure, always seeking to extend her knowledge and experience in the best ways possible.
He added: “The victim is a student who has failed on research work and was asking for a lot of moral support.

“She had personally finances her research and had suffered a paranoia attack five times.
“The witnesses claimed that Alana had difficulty managing her private life and her research.

“She was in regular contact by email with her parents to whom she receives moral support. She did not handle her stresses well.

Last night devastated mum Julie, 42, told the Sunday People: “Social media was like a drug to Ruby – she was addicted.

“The more obsessed she became the less she engaged with real life.

“She became withdrawn and ­isolated on it – always in her room, looking for likes, ­responses and answers to her problems on her phone from people who could not give them.

“It was a place for her to hide from reality while also seeking validation from her peers.

“It overrode everything else at a time when she also became ­mentally really unwell.

“I tried everything – turning off the wi-fi, confiscating her phone, going through her messages – but she always found a way to access it.

“Social media contributed to her death.”

A 12-year-old schoolgirl who killed herself was “emotionally overwhelmed” and influenced by her intense use of social media, a coroner has said.

Jessica Scatterson, from Dallam in Warrington, was discovered in her bedroom, surrounded by soft toys and with “RIP” written on her heel, two days before her 13th birthday in April 2017.

She was allegedly bullied at school and struggled to cope with the pressures of social media, an inquest heard.

Dan and Morgan Ocheltree allege that principal Clint Johnson and school counselor Todd Tyler knew about a text message their daughter, Madison, sent to a friend on April 5 that said she was planning her suicide, according to the lawsuit which was obtained by ABC News.

It was on a clear and warm autumn day in 2018 that Taylor Pryor's life began a spiral toward a tragic end.

She collided mid-air with a fellow soccer player — both jumping for the ball — during a game with the women's soccer team at the Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg.

Taylor didn't lose consciousness, but she sustained a concussion. Soon, everyday tasks became a struggle.

"We knew things weren't right. She wasn't the Taylor we knew," said her mother, Darseen.

"She was there, but she wasn't there. She had a vacant look on her face."

Severe concussion symptoms — anger, sensitivity to light and lack of concentration — soon began to surface, her family said.

Emily was very concerned about coronavirus itself but more concerned about the mental health impact of isolation and the fear of the unknown,” Annabel Owen, 21, wrote in a Facebook post, which has since been deleted.

But warned other parents of the effect of lockdown, after seeing no indication Beth was struggling quite as much.

Mike Palmer said: “I have no doubt the lockdown has played a major part in Beth's death.

“She couldn't finish college, she couldn't go out and see her friends. She felt as though this three-month lockdown was to her 300 years.

“This three-month lockdown I think became an extreme, almost obsessive obsession, that it was never going to end.

"The devastation is indescribable. It saddens me to say but I don't think she'll be alone, I think they'll be other young adults, teenagers feeling exactly the same, feeling very vulnerable, maybe very scared about the covid-19 situation, having their lives changed.

“I'd hate to think of another family going through what we're going through now.

"Even if it puts one child off taking their own life, hopefully no-one should feel isolated enough to do this."

London Bruns' parents said their daughter seemed happy and showed no signs of depression.
