Intense Volleyball mourns the loss of Morgan Dorneker, daughter of Jerry and Janet Dorneker.  Morgan was a vivacious and energetic force with an infectious laugh and loving spirit.  She was bright, creative and beautiful.  Morgan’s curiosity and inquisitiveness was legendary.  Her mastery of Chinese was breathtaking and she enjoyed sharing her talent with others.  Morgan grew up in the Intense gym and embodies what Intense is all about - family.

I wanted to tell you a little about our daughter and I thought it might be important to mention that Ella had a freak accidental fall on June 1, 2020 where she struck her head on the asphalt road in front of family and neighbors. The impact with the ground was so loud and severe, our hearts sank feeling we might lose our little girl right then and there in the street. We rushed her to Norton Children’s Hospital, and they found she had two skull fractures and small bleeds inside her head and of late we learned she sustained some frontal lobe damage to her brain. The bleeding stopped on its own meaning no surgery was required and she was released from the hospital in a few days, albeit with severe headache pain that lasted several more days.

As she recovered, I breathed several sighs of relief thinking we’d dodged a bullet, but now I wonder if we’d simply bought ourselves some time. Ella seemed to return mostly to herself although some small changes occurred. Namely at times she would use special glare dampening glasses and she told us that some foods tasted different from the time of the injury onwards. She also often told us that she could barely smell anything. If you remember that Summer of 2020 was at the height of the COVID-19 lockdowns all over our country and world and one thing that accompanied the lack of face-to-face interaction was that Ella and millions of other kids around the country took an even deeper dive into social media.

Ella struggled with sadness and anxiety over the past eight months or so, but she was also very good at keeping her true thoughts from us. At a point we realized that we needed to seek help beyond what her family support could provide so we sought out counseling for her. My naïve mind thought getting her to see a therapist would be treated as if I were making a call to 9-1-1. But we found that we were wading into a system already overwhelmed by mental and emotional help needs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was five weeks before my wife and I got to talk to someone by phone and after evaluating the situation, they deferred our case but gave referrals to other therapists, essentially starting the process all over.

The next therapist we tried either canceled or simply forgot our appointment on two of the four scheduled times and once again we were looking again. In December, we FINALLY found someone we really felt could help us, so although they didn’t accept insurance, we were desperate and moved forward. Ella seemed to be making progress. She was finally initiating conversations with us again and we thought we were on the right track. In the end it appears she got some really upsetting news late at night when we were all already asleep and she made a terrible, rash decision.

Ella was an eighth-grader and I’ll confess that eighth grade was the most difficult of any of my school years. That age group goes through so many changes and for me personally, at that time I was getting anonymous threatening phone calls from some coward, and this was before the time of caller id, let alone cell phones. So, I had a lot of anguish and fear,…suffering that I never shared with my parents. But even during those worst of times I don’t remember ever considering taking my own life as a way out. And I don’t remember any of my former classmates reflecting on our school years with those types of thoughts, at least not at that young age. But the stresses that many typically began experiencing as young adults now appears to somehow have worked their way down into our teens or maybe even younger.

Katie Meyer, Stanford soccer star, dies by suicide the coroner's office on Thursday determined that the death of Stanford women's soccer player Katie Meyer was suicide.

The County of Santa Clara Medical Examiner-Coroner said there is no foul play related to Meyer's death.

"She was usually the tallest in the room with the biggest smile and would do anything for anyone," Michelle explained.

The five-foot-nine Matoaca Middle Schooler was an athlete, honors student and loved music.

“She was teaching herself some piano, and we got her guitar," Shane said. "She wanted an electric guitar with an amp and all that kind of stuff to begin with."

But the beautiful, talented girl the world saw on the outside wasn’t the reality Sophia felt inside.

The teenagers who bullied the "brave little girl" into taking her own life continued to leave nasty comments online in the days that followed her suicide, but this time targeting her death.

Sarah Shulze was energetic, ambitious, committed.

She served her hometown of Oak Park as a member of the National Charity League and was a dedicated member of the Associated Student Body at Oak Park High for four years. She was the senior class secretary in 2019 and helped plan the senior prom.

In her time at the University of Wisconsin, she earned an internship to the Wisconsin state Legislature and volunteered as a poll worker for the 2020 presidential election.

Shulze was worldly, with her thirst for adventure taking her on trips to Europe, Africa and Alaska.

Oak Park distance runner Sarah Shulze will be ‘remembered forever’

Shulze died in Wisconsin where she was a student-athlete at University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was 21 years old.

“Sarah took her own life,” the family said. “Balancing athletics, academics and the demands of everyday life overwhelmed her in a single, desperate moment. Like you, we are shocked and grief stricken while holding on tightly to all that Sarah was.

Madeleine Mae Billings of Denver passed in her sleep on December 30, 2021 after a long and arduous struggle with a treatment-resistant eating disorder. She was just 23.

The Denver, Colorado, family first noticed something was wrong just before Maddie turned 13. That summer before 8th grade, she’d gone on a bike trip through France with her grandparents in a group that also included a teen girl who had an eating disorder. It made an impression on Maddie, her mom said. Maddie had also taken to heart some light-hearted comments teasing her about her healthy appetite.

That same summer, she also attended a soccer camp and another experience away from home.

“By the time we picked her up from that, she had dropped so much (weight) that she just didn’t look like herself,” Lisa Billings recalled.

Her parents put her in intensive therapy and Maddie bounced back quickly. But as she started high school and faced a challenging schedule of classes, plus field hockey and soccer practice, her eating disorder came back.

"She made a couple mistakes. It led to some physical, sexual, emotional abuse," her dad Hunter explained to FOX 13 in Tampa Bay. "She was blackmailed. She was bullied. She was betrayed by her best friend."Her parents say that despite experiencing cyberbullying and abusive friendships throughout her teens, playing hockey had given her purpose and a source of happiness.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is investigating McKenna's death while her parents grieve.

McKenna Elizabeth Brown of Palm Harbor, a 16 year old Senior at East Lake High School, passed away on August 7th. McKenna loved life, her family, God, hockey, The Chapel, her teammates, and friends

It unraveled quickly

She was a 14-year-old freshman at York High School in the fall of 2020, competing for the cross country team, while also participating on the school's one-act drama team.

After Zoom classes the previous spring, school was back to in-person learning and her transition from middle school to high school was going seamlessly.

For months, she had began experiencing what they thought was acid reflux. Over-the-counter medication didn't help and when it worsened, they went to the family doctor.

The prescribed medication didn't work, either. The doctor thought it might be an ulcer and arranged an appointment with a gastrointestinal specialist in Omaha. However, with COVID-19 cases on the rise again, getting test results was next to impossible.

17-year-old Holly Egan, of Seacrest Avenue, had been struggling with her mental health but had found it hard to open up about her problems.

She died after being hit by a train in Layton, Blackpool, on January 27 this year., 2022

Assistant Coroner, Andrew Cousins, said the he evidence, which included a suicide note, was conclusive. He added that Holly’s case was especially ‘sad’ and ‘tragic’.

An inquest at Blackpool Town Hall heard how the teenager, from Fleetwood, was first referred to CAMHS in March 2020. Consultant Alji-Mohamed Samir, consultant psychiatrist with Children and Adult Mental Health Services In Patient services at Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust, said Holly then came to hospital with low mood and suicidal thoughts in May.

She remained in hospital on May 8, and was discharged a few days later, with support and follow ups arranged, following assessment by the specialist team. Yet at an appointment on May 13, Holly continued to show depressive symptoms and low mood, so she was admitted to a specialist centre called the Cove, based in Heysham as an inpatient.

Despite initially engaging in the activities on the ward like baking, and maintaining a good diet, she did have a history of self harm, explained the doctor. The doctor told the hearing: "She said she had thought of making cuts to herself and wanted to end her life."

Jennifer was devastated! We saw the hurt in her face. We saw the tears. She was broken all over again. She must have thought, if a judge and 2 preachers won’t believe me or think his actions are not bad, then who will. I guess the pain was too much for her to bear. Unfortunately, Jennifer committed suicide by hanging 6 days after his bond hearing. Or at least that is what we have been told. Still hard to believe. After all, it benefits the predator, no witness for the trial. I think this would make any parent wonder, especially with all that has happened over the years, it is hard to really know.

Adriana Olivia Kuch was always a happy child, her father Michael Kuch says.

"She was a wild child," he told Daily Voice on Thursday, Feb. 9. "She wanted to have fun."

On Feb. 3,, 2023  Kuch and his wife found their 14-year-old daughter dead by suicide in their Bayville home — two days after she was the victim of an attack in the halls of Central Regional High School.

Kuch says these types of attacks at the hands of a group of girls have been an ongoing issue at CRHS, and now, he's calling for action.

"These girls are bullying and harassing and making videos jumping people because it's a trend and they think it's fun," Kuch said. "And the school is not punishing them."

Boulder County coroner rules CU Boulder student’s death a suicide The Boulder County Coroner has ruled that a University of Colorado Boulder freshman found dead in her dorm last month died of suicide.

Madalyn “Madi” Prewett, 19, was found at CU Boulder’s Williams Village on Oct. 2.

According a report written by forensic pathologist Dr. Daniel Lingamfelter, an autopsy found Prewett’s blood had lethal levels of trazodone, a sedative and anti-depressant.

A note also was found, according to the report.

Lingamfelter ruled the cause of death trazodone intoxication and the manner of death suicide.According to her family, Prewett struggled with several physical ailments including postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, a condition that affects circulation. As a result she had an ongoing battle with depression, and her family said she had been especially struggling in the weeks before her death.

In her junior year, Madi started to get sick. She missed much her last years of high school because of the constant vomiting, fatigue, headaches, and dizziness. In spite of this, she was still able to graduate with her friends in 2018. When her symptoms seemed to improve at sea level, we had her go to the University of Hawaii at Manoa. And while she felt fine initially there, her health again started to decline. She now also had the added burden of mourning the death of her beloved cousin, Kate Prewett (17) who passed away from cancer in August 2018. Madi tried so hard to manage her depression and physical illnesses alone in Hawaii. However, she had to return home in February so we could help her get better. This spring was spent seeing every doctor and mental health professional we could to try to tackle this. In July, she felt like she was healthy enough to try school again, so she enrolled at CU Boulder. We hadn't seen her look this healthy in a long time. There was color in her cheeks and she was so excited about life and what she would do with it now that she finally felt healthy again! She was so excited to finally live!

Unfortunately, two weeks before her death, her symptoms came back in full force. She couldn't get out of bed, much less get to class. She was always so tired and exhausted. The day before she died by suicide, during a beautiful drive back to Boulder, she said she worried about being on disability her whole life. We told her that she was improving and that she was doing great. We were so proud of her and knew how hard this was for her. Unfortunately, after a rough Monday, she looked at her future and saw only sickness, sadness and merely existing. She decided to permanently set down that burden that she had had on her back for the last three years.

The teenager, who had autism, was due to stand trial in March 2022, but charges were dropped in December 2021 after evidence emerged she had been groomed by American extremist Christopher Cook.

Jesse Nicholls, representing Rhianan's family, said while "consideration was given" to whether the teenager was a victim of sexual exploitation, a referral order was only made in August 2021 by a social worker, despite police and MI5 knowing she was a victim for almost a year.

"Rhianan was aware for over a year that she was being prosecuted for serious criminal offences at a time when she was 14 years old and a victim of child sexual exploitation," Mr Nicholls said.

"In continuing to investigate and prosecute, and not withdraw the prosecution, the state contributed to Rhianan's death.

"If Rhianan had been identified as a victim earlier and had Rhianan been signposted to appropriate support, her death could have been avoided."

More than 2 years after UA freshman's suicide, family, friends work to raise awareness about mental health

It wasn't expected. There weren't any goodbyes. She was making plans with her sorority sisters. Parents' weekend was in a few days, and her family was coming down from Kansas. She seemed to be doing well. She was taking her meds and going to counseling every week. She was talking to her parents regularly — until she stopped.

September was the two-year anniversary of Lane Marrs' suicide. Marrs was a freshman at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and a pledge of Alpha Omicron Pi. She had been a student for just six weeks before she died. She was 18.

Marrs was gang raped at 16, five years before the #MeToo movement launched a national conversation on sexual assault. Girls ages 16 to 19 are four times more likely to be victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault. Children who are sexually abused are four times more likely to experience PTSD, according to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, also known as RAINN. Marrs, like many others, didn't escape these effects.

Jan Marrs, Marrs' mother, said the family knew she was struggling with depression, but they didn't know why. Most people described her as strong, independent and down to earth, but she started showing signs of PTSD in 2015, her senior year of high school. There were nights when Marrs would walk down the stairs of her family's home in Overland Park, Kan., late at night screaming that she needed to get out of there.

"She was in full-blown flight mode," Jan Marrs said in a recent interview. They had to tackle her to get her to calm down. Her daughter would wake up, realize what had just happened, and walk back up the stairs to bed. That was the first signal that something serious was going on.

Lane Marrs blamed it on mild depression, body-image insecurities and friend problems, but after three different counselors, her family figured out the true root of the PTSD — the gang rape by three boys.

"At that time, we knew nothing about mental health," Jan Marrs said.

In April of that year, Lane Marrs made a suicide attempt. After she was rushed to the hospital, she was placed on medication at the doctor's insistence. She started seeing a psychiatrist who prescribed anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds.

Reid Essmyer, her boyfriend at the time, has two tattoos reminding him of her. One is a mandala that Lane Marrs drew, the same tattoo she had on her back, and the other is the date they met: New Year's Eve, 2015. The two started dating their senior year.

Essmyer was aware of the depression and PTSD, but he was still crazy about her. "You love someone for the good and the bad," he said.

Lane Marrs reported her assault to the police, partially because her parents made her, Jan Marrs said. The police started investigating, but the teen wouldn't help much because she wanted to protect one of the boys she worked with. She died before she could give the police any other information.

"After she died, we decided to focus on healing rather than revenge," Jan Marrs said.
