On Friday, her friend and former teammate, Hallie Linacre, died in her sleep at her family’s home in Richmond. She was 20 years old and a student at Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts.

Stephanie Potts, Maddie’s mother, spoke on behalf of Hallie’s family as they made preparations for her funeral.

“We don’t know for sure what happened,” Potts said Sunday. “She didn’t have any symptoms. She was a very happy, healthy girl. She went to bed feeling fine. Her mother was unable to wake her the next day.”

The Linacre family issued this statement: “Hallie was everything a person could want their child to aspire to. A hard worker on and off the soccer field, her smile lit you up, her laughter drew you in, and her hug warmed your soul.

The body of a missing 3-year-old girl who was swept away alongside her older sister in a Utah flash flood has been found, authorities said.
