She had recently graduated from North Atlanta High School where she was an exceptional student, beloved by her classmates, teachers and coaches. She was a member of National Honor Society and the varsity volleyball team, and was admitted to and excited to attend The University of Georgia in the fall of 2020. In the week before her death, Catherine accepted an early bid and was initiated into the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority as a double legacy.

Catherine loved cooking, art, singing and dancing, going to concerts, but most of all being with her friends. She was a passionate binge-watcher of television shows and movies, and she excelled at any sport she wanted to try: basketball, gymnastics, volleyball, lacrosse, tennis and cheerleading.

Miranda was beautiful inside and out. She touched so many people with her gentle warm spirit and positive outlook on life. She fought cancer so bravely, and put her complete hope and trust in the Lord. In doing so, she provided a powerful testimony of faith that affected all that knew what she was going through. She had a wonderful sense of humor, an infectious laugh and a genuine kindness that endeared her to others.

Last week, Nutt and Taylor say Payge took a hoverboard for a ride. That evening the 11-year-old called her mom.

She said she had taken a fall. It seemed mild.

“Just like your normal headache from bonking your head or something,” said Nutt, who has six kids. Payge is her youngest. “No swelling, no bruising nothing.”

Still, she was keeping a close eye on her.

“At midnight I checked on her, she was talking to me,” Nutt said.

She would have never imagined what would happen next. At two in the morning, she found her daughter unresponsive. She called 911. A few hours later, doctors gave her the bad news: the fall wasn’t just serious, it was deadly.

“She had a crack all the way behind her ear all the way up to the middle of her head,” Nutt said.

That crack in her skull, which would have been avoided with a helmet, killed her daughter. Now, the mother faced a heart-wrenching decision.

“You can either sit here and let her slowly die or you can donate her organs,” Nutt said.

Former Quincy High athlete dies after two-year battle with brain cancer

Priscilla Bonica, a Quincy High School graduate and former captain of the girls’ basketball team, died Saturday after a two-year battle with brain cancer. Her father, Stephen Bonica, posted a short message to Facebook honoring his daughter and thanking supporters. Bonica was 20 years old.

“After more than two years battling a vicious cancer, Priscilla passed this afternoon – peacefully in her bed, surrounded by family and close friends,” his message reads. “She fought hard for so long like a kid from Hough’s Neck. She fought like a 'Nice Kid.' We are so proud of everything she has done for us and for so many over her short 20 years on this earth. Thank you all for your continued prayers and support. We love you all.”

A three-sport athlete, Bonica graduated from Quincy High School in 2021 and had been recruited to play basketball at Westfield State University before her diagnosis. In May 2021, doctors at Boston Children’s Hospital diagnosed her with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, or HLH, after she sought medical attention for persistent headaches.

riscilla Beth Bonica’s soul was born into Eternal Life at home, surrounded by loved ones. She suffered a long fierce battle against cancer until being set free on June 17, 2023 at the age of 20. Rain peacefully fell to the earth that day, as if tears were descending from the eyes of heaven while angels filled her room awaiting an embrace from our dear Priscilla to safely escort her to her heavenly home.

Priscilla was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiform shortly after graduating from Quincy High School in 2021. This vicious disease slowly stripped away her physical being and childhood dreams but it could not touch her beautiful heart or destroy her spirit. She fought hard for so long, like a kid from Hough’s Neck. Priscilla silently endured her heavy cross with tremendous faith and profound grace until she took her last breath. Throughout her life and more so through her powerful endurance of suffering, she became an inspiration to all who came to witness her journey.

The untimely passing of Lily Nichols, a student at the University of South Carolina. Lily's sudden and tragic death, resulting from an accidental drug overdose, has left her friends and family in disbelief and sorrow.

Troopers identify the person killed in a two-vehicle crash in Lee County, Iowa Saturday.

Troopers say the crash happened around noon Saturday at 205th Avenue and Highway 16 near Pilot Grove.

According to troopers, the driver of an SUV, 16-year-old Kodi Lee Moeller of Salem, Iowa, failed to yield at the intersection and their passenger side was hit by an oncoming Freightliner truck.

Troopers said the Moeller was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. Moeller was pronounced dead at the scene.
